Use these patterns to choose what to practise. They describe the papers reviewed; they do not predict the next paper.
Across the papers
Every reviewed paper carries 60 marks. The shape changes from two assessed questions in 2001–2007 to three 20-mark sections from 2008 onward.
Practise: a complete paper shape, then compare how the response demand changes between sections.
Extended argument is the leading recurring capability in the reviewed questions, appearing across different text and response settings.
Practise: building a line of argument with evidence, explanation and a clear connection to the task.
Analytical-response marks are 40 of 60 in 2001 and 20 of 60 in 2025. The response mix has changed, even though the total paper remains stable.
Practise: recent papers for current weighting, while using earlier papers to broaden response experience.
From 2008 through 2025, the reviewed papers use three recurring 20-mark sections: text response, writing in context and analysis of language use.
Practise: switching between close textual argument, crafted writing and analysis of persuasion.

Start with a recent paper. Before writing, identify the section, response demand and marks. After writing, sort missed marks by the kind of thinking required—not only by the text or topic.
Best next move: practise one task from each of the three recurring sections, then compare how your structure and evidence change.
